1.       Have a good look at jewellery shops in your area. Compare prices and quality on a range of items.  When you are ready to buy, you’ll have this information to inform your choices.

2.       Visit established local Antiques Fairs. Get to know the jewellers who trade there regularly.

3.       Remember, when you buy from a High Street jeweller, shop overheads are calculated into the price you pay. You will generally get more for your money at a fair.

4.       Understand the basics of hallmarks. Visit the Birmingham assay office www.theassayoffice.co.uk for a clear explanation of current hallmarks.

5.       Invest in a jeweller’s loupe, or eyeglass, or ask to use one when examining jewellery in a shop or at a fair. Any reputable jeweller will be pleased to allow you a closer look at the items you like. A loupe is a strong magnifying glass. It will take you into a whole new world, where you can see every detail of the jewellery you examine, the condition and clarity of precious stones, hallmarks on gold and silver, and any wear or damage that might not be apparent with the naked eye.

6.       Take care of your jewellery! Store items separately, in individual boxes if possible. If you store it all loose in a box, you risk scratches to metal and damage to delicate settings.

7.       Consider buying some good ‘Heirloom’ pieces for your children, to add to any family jewellery you may already possess. Apart from the sentimental value, it is likely to be a good investment.

8.       Don’t attempt any DIY repairs on jewellery. Without the necessary skills, tools and materials, you’ll risk spoiling a good piece, and damage the value in the process.

9.       Develop a good relationship with your jeweller. The chances are, he or she will have reliable contacts for repairs, if you need them, and may be prepared to part-exchange items you have fallen out of love with!

10.  Enjoy your jewellery! Buy wearable pieces that you will use. There’s nothing so sad as a beautiful ring or necklace that spends its life in a dark jewellery box.
